The Whitney Stakes is the summer championship for older horses and one of the most prestigious handicaps in the United States, run at Saratoga in Saratoga Springs, New York. First staged in 1928 and named after the Whitney family, it is a Grade 1 over 1⅛ miles on dirt for three-year-olds and up, held in early August.

The Whitney is a Win and You’re In for the Breeders’ Cup Classic, so its winner earns an automatic place in the season’s richest dirt race. Its honour roll reads like a hall of fame of American handicap horses, and a strong Whitney is often the first firm pointer to the autumn championships.
