The course

The track

A galloping right-handed track whose defining feature is a stiff, uphill final furlong. It rewards a genuine stayer and a horse still travelling late, and it finds out non-stayers and one-paced types.

The uphill finish

Sandown's climb to the line is the making of the track. A horse that stays every yard and is still on the bridle turning in has a real edge; the hill finds out anything short of the trip.

A galloping test

The round course is fair and galloping, suiting a strong-travelling horse over middle and staying trips rather than a sharp, quick type.

The five-furlong sprint

Sandown's sprint course runs up the hill throughout and is a true test of speed and stamina combined, a stiff five furlongs.

Big-race days

Sandown stages the Coral-Eclipse in July, one of the season's top middle-distance Group 1s, and the Tingle Creek, a Grade 1 two-mile chase, in December.

What actually matters

Draw & pace

How the shape of a race tends to play at Sandown. A tendency is a question to ask, not a rule.

Stamina
The hill

The uphill finish rewards a thorough stayer. A horse that idles or fails to see out its trip can be caught late; look for genuine stamina.

Class
Big-race form

Sandown's feature races reward proven top-level form. The Eclipse in particular often pits the Classic generation against their elders.

Jumping
Fluency & stamina

On the jumps course the Railway fences come in quick succession down the back straight, so accurate jumping and stamina for the finish both count.

Draw bias is generally modest at Sandown; stamina for the stiff uphill finish matters far more than the stall number. Look for a strong-travelling stayer that will see out the trip and relish the climb to the line.

Our angle

Where we add the edge

The Overlay rates every runner on how often its connections actually win versus what the price expects, then surfaces the horses we make bigger than the market. We are a data-driven analysis tool, not a tipping service: every call is a suggestion for you to judge, settled honestly at Betfair SP, win or lose.

On every Sandown card, our read on each runner, the going, the draw and prices appear on the dashboard with the plain-English reason behind each one.
