Favourites in sprints vs staying races

spr7f1m1m4stay

Sprints are lotteries and staying races are tests, and favourites behave accordingly. The longer the trip, the more reliable the market leader becomes.

Stamina sorts a field; speed scatters it

Over five and six furlongs a fast start, a stumble or a wide draw can settle a race, so even the right horse often does not win. Over a staying trip, class and stamina tell, and that is usually the favourite.

One honest caveat

The staying band is heavily populated by jumps races, where favourites are stronger across the board. So part of this is a trip effect and part of it is a code effect. Either way, short trips on the flat are where the favourite is least trustworthy.

Be most sceptical of favourites in sprints, where chaos rules, and give them more respect over a staying trip where the form has time to work.

It is also why sprint handicaps are such fertile ground for finding an overpriced alternative to the jolly.

See where the model thinks the market is wrong

The Overlay is a free, data-driven UK and Irish racing model. It looks for the gap between a horse's true chance and its price, logs every selection before the off, and settles in public, win or lose. It is not a tipster, and it tells you when to sit a race out.
